Boiler Inspection
Due to the nature of the service, boilers are prone to integrity threats that result from excessive corrosion, significant grooving or undercut at construction, peaking of longitudinal welds, development of cracks, fatigue related failure due to cyclic operation among others.
BRIMBERG Inspection Limited provides Asset Integrity Management solutions in accordance with British Standard (SAFED- The Safety Assessment Federation) which provides best engineering practices that meet both integrity and statutory requirement. These standards are;
a) (SBG1)- Guidelines for the examination of boiler shell-to-endplate and furnace-to-endplate welded joints
b) (SBG2)- Guidelines for the examination of longitudinal seams of shell boilers
Non-Destructive Testing and Inspection of boilers is key to safe operation of the boilers preventing catastrophic failures. The recommended testing method of the boiler weld seams are;
i. Ultrasonic Flaw Detection and
ii. Magnetic Particle Inspection
These techniques are used to identify and size cracks resulting from fatigue or corrosion-fatigue which develop during service as a result of fluctuations in pressure, temperature or a combination of both. Radiography and Dye Penetrant Testing may be done when need is established by the inspector.
From Industry experience, boiler inspection and testing has revealed a significant number of boilers with cracks at the longitudinal seams. Had the cracks not been detected, these boilers could have failed with catastrophic results. This implies that hundreds of boilers countrywide continue to be in operation while their integrity is questionable.
BRIMBERG Inspection Limited has a robust team comprised of qualified, competent and experienced pressure vessels Inspector certified to API 510 as well as NDT personnel with ISO 9712 AINDT & SAQCC Certification to Level III and II in UT, MT, PT& RT, with vast experience in inspection of boilers. It is with this advantage that we have saved our clients’ equipment, prevented boiler incidents/ accidents and met statutory requirements.
Non-Destructive Testing
FOR CORROSION AND WELD QUALITY ASSESSMENT
Non-Destructive Testing is one of the most effective method of evaluating the condition of an equipment or component without damaging it. The two main features used for the evaluation are corrosion also called metal loss and weld quality or deterioration.
BRIMBERG INSPECTION LIMITED can provide fully trained and experienced NDT inspectors together with calibrated equipment to be able to carry out the following testing methods;
a) ULTRASONIC TESTING (UT)
This method employs high frequency of sound pulses that are emitted by transducer. This sound wave is induced in to the material through a probe which is usually in contact with the material. These sound waves propagate through the material and are returned back to the probe when they reach an interface.
b) MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION (MPI)
This method involves the component or equipment under test being magnetized. This magnetization process is supplemented by the application of ferromagnetic particles on the already magnetized surface.
c) VISUAL INSPECTION (VI)
This method involves both direct and indirect visual inspection techniques. Direct inspection is where the material is inspected directly by human eye without additional visual aids while indirect inspection may involve the use of magnifying glass, mirror, boresc ope (mini camera) closed circuit TV etc.
d) LIQUID PENETRANT INSPECTION (LPI).
This involves applying a liquid dye to the surface of a material and leaving the dye to “dwell” on the surface of the material on predetermined time. The liquid can be either a color that is easily visible under normal lighting condition or a yellow/green fluorescent color that requires special lighting condition to be seen effectively.
e) MAGNETIC FLUX LEAKAGE (MFL)
This is a method of NDT that is used to detect corrosion and pitting in steel structures, most commonly pipelines and storage tanks. A powerful magnet is used to magnetize the steel at. At areas where there is corrosion and missing metal, the magnate field “leakes” from the steel.
f) RADIOGRAPHY TESTING (RT)
It is an NDT method of inspecting materials for hidden flaws by using the ability of short wave length electromagnetic radiation to penetrate various materials e.g tanks, pipes etc. In this method, a piece of radiographic film is placed on the remote side of the material under inspection and radiation is then transmitted from one side of the material to the remote side where the radiog raphic film is placed.
Inspection of Lifting Equipment
LIFTING EQUIPMENT INSPECTION FROM BRIMBERG INSPECTION LIMITED ENSURE SAFETY AND RELIABILITY OF YOUR EQUIPMENT. WHETHER YOU OWN OR OPERATE LIFTING OR HOISTING EQUIPMENT, IT IS IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE SAFE, AND IN COMPLIANCE WITH STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS.
As a leading supplier, we can provide you with certified lifting Inspectors to perform conformity assessments, as well as statutory and voluntary inspections on hoisting and lifting equipment across the world. We are also able to provide training for operators of cranes and elevating platforms in accordance with local and international standards.
We ensure safe and proper working capability and condition of your lifting and hoisting equipment by maintaining your equipment capability and availability to maximize uptime and planned outages by minimizing operational cost.
We can also provide testing services for operators of cranes and elevating platforms in accordance with local and international standards.
Our lifting equipment inspection services include:
• Checking of brakes, clutches, sheaves, and wire rope assemblies
• Design studies and calculation reviews
• Dynamic and static load testing
• Inspection of all the structural load bearing members, including sheaves
• Checking crane girders, rails and columns of overhead cranes to assure structural integrity
• Line level and span crane gantry surveys

We also verify load monitoring equipment, and undertake both destructive and nondestructive inspection work including weld inspection. We provide proof load and initial testing if required. All these services can be undertaken at our client’s premises, or remotely if required. It is our duty to examine the entire assembly prior to undertaking repairs to ensure client safety is enhanced. It is our duty too to ensure this examination is undertaken as a courtesy. All inspected equipment is issued with a certificate.
Overhaul & Calibration of Pressure Relief Valves
A PROPERLY DESIGNED, APPLIED, AND INSTALLED PRESSURE-RELIEVING DEVICE THAT IS MAINTAINED IN GOOD OPERATING CONDITION IS ESSENTIAL TO THE SAFETY OF PERSONNEL AND THE PROTECTION OF EQUIPMENT DURING ABNORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES.
NEED FOR INSPECTION
Pressure relieving devices should be treated as delicate instruments because their accurate functioning is critical to safe plant operation.
Failure of pressure-relieving devices to function properly when needed could result in the overpressure of the vessels, exchangers, boilers, or other equipment they were installed to protect.
OUR SOLUTIONS
BRIMBERG INSPECTION LIMITED carries out inspections, testing, maintenance and resetting of pressure relief devices to determine the general physical and operating conditions of the devices,and ensure that their performance meets the requirements for a given installation.
